
Baseball Brings the Thunder After Lightning Delay
Baseball had to wait out a two-hour lightning delay to get their second day in Forest City, Iowa, started. The Tigers took a few innings to get going before rattling off a seven-run inning and taking a 16-6 win to start the day against Waldorf.
The Warriors struck first with a two-out RBI-single in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Doane answered right back with seven runs in the top of the third inning. Johnny Vulcano singled to tie the game as Logan Amick scored. Brayden Jones followed with an infield single to plate Sam Kwapnioski. A double by Jordan Bond drove in two more runs and Taiyo Takahashi doubled to drive in Bond. Gerald Nix added an RBI-single and Carson Baker scored the final run of the inning on an error.
The Tigers added two runs in the sixth inning for a 9-1 lead. Vulcano plated a run with a ground out and Kwapnioski scored on a wild pitch. Waldorf came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to narrow the gap, 9-5, though the difference wouldn't last for long.
Kwapnioski smacked a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to start another 7-run rally for Doane. Bond drove in a run with a ground out and Harris scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 14-5. Justin Nevells doubled with two outs to drive in two runs for an 11-run lead. Waldorf led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run for the final scoring.
Nicolas Yard made his first start for the Tigers and went 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six. Alec Harshaw threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The offense had 11 hits in the game while drawing 13 walks. Picking up two hits apiece were Vulcano, Takahashi, and Nevells. Amick and Kwapnioski scored three runs apiece while Kwapnioski and Bond drove in three runs each.
