No. 1 Northwestern Defeats Tiger Football in Iowa
Football ran into a team playing with a lot of momentum on Saturday as the Tigers traveled to take on No. 1 Northwestern. The Red Raiders, the defending NAIA champions, defeated NCAA FCS member Drake last weekend in overtime and were playing their first home game of the season. Northwestern scored on their first nine possessions on their way to a 51-7 win over the Tigers.
Doane started the game with two quick completions to account for 27 yards and a first down. The Red Raiders were able to hold the Tigers in check from that point and force a punt. Northwestern's first points came on a 61-yard touchdown run. Doane would fumble on two of their next three possessions as NWC went up 24-0 early in the second quarter. The Red Raiders led 38-0 at halftime and 51-0 after three quarters.
The lone touchdown for the Tigers came early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers converted a field goal but a Red Raider penalty gave Doane a fresh set of downs inside the red zone. Cruz Kirwan found Jeremiah Payne for a seven-yard touchdown pass on second down.
For the game, Payne led the team with 75 yards receiving on three receptions. Nate Fox added two receptions for 20 yards. Kirwan threw for 159 yards on 12-of-30. Rian Green ran for 21 yards on seven carries.
Defensively, Jarret Boggs posted seven tackles, five solo. He also had the team's only sack of the game. Cooper Hancock was in on six tackles, five solo. Posting four tackles apiece were Jackson Seward, Ryan Michael, and Luke Collison.
Doane will travel to Jamestown, N.D., next week to take on the Jimmies. Kickoff for September 23 is set at 1 PM.
