10-0 Run Clinches Win for Men's Basketball
Doane Men's Basketball snapped a long losing-streak for the second weekend in a row on Saturday as they topped Dakota Wesleyan, 58-52, in Crete. The win was the first over DWU since 2014, snapping a 15-game skid a week after snapping an 18-game skid to Morningside.
The game opened with a strong start for DWU, jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Doane answered with a 10-0 run to not only bounce back from the slow start but to take the lead. DWU regained the lead with a three-point play on their next possession and held the lead (other than two ties) until the final seconds of the opening half. Anthony Laravie (SR/Omaha, Neb.) hit a 3-point basket with three seconds left in the half to give Doane a 24-23 lead at the break.
Doane would build an eight point lead in the second half only to see DWU use a 10-0 run to take a 48-46 lead with 3:48 to play. Both teams would score on their next possessions as the game approached the under-3 minute mark in the game and DWU up by two points. Doane would tie the game on a Joe Burt (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) layup, take the lead on a Laravie jumper and seal the win with six straight free throws by Brady Timm (FR/Yutan, Neb.). A 10-0 run sealed the win for Doane with DWU adding a basket at the buzzer for the final score.
Laravie led all scorers with 24 points as he was the only Doane player in double figures. He knocked down 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Timm and Josiah Gardiner (SO/Milford, Neb.) finished with eight points apiece. Alec Oberhauser (SR/Parkersburg, Iowa) led all players with 14 rebounds and tied for game-high honors with three assists.
DWU was led by Jeffrey Schuch with 13 points while Koln Oppold posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Both players had three assists in the game.
Doane will have a week to prepare for another key GPAC contest as they host Midland on January 29 at 3:45 PM. The game will also be highlighted by men's basketball alumni weekend.
