Men's Wrestling Rolls Past Concordia

Men's Wrestling, ranked No. 6 in the latest NAIA poll, closed out the 2024 slate of matches on Friday evening with a GPAC match at Concordia in Seward. The Tigers dominated from start to finish in posting a 46-3 victory over the Bulldogs. The team's point total was the most ever posted against Concordia and the margin of victory was the second largest. The Tigers have won five straight over the Bulldogs by a combined score of 209-17.

In the opening match, NAIA No. 21 Hunter Bennett picked up a takedown and posted a pin in 1:41 over Aidan Trowbridge at 125. 

Matthew Terrence, ranked No. 14 at 133, duplicated Bennett's efforts with a takedown and a pin in 1:58. 

Concordia's lone win came at 141 as No. 9 Creighton Baughman defeated No. 14 Devin Avedissian, 7-1. The match was scoreless after the first period and Baughman led 3-1 after the second.

Nate Lendt, ranked No. 1 at 149, posted a 15-0 tech fall win over No. 22 Steven Barnes in 2:25. Lendt recorded a takedown and then added four nearfall points on three occasions to close out the match. 

Ben Miller, ranked No. 12 at 157, posted a tech fall win over Francisco Mendez in 4:25. Miller won 17-2 as he recorded three first period takedowns for a 9-2 lead. He took the bottom position to start the second period and escaped for a point. A takedown and four nearfall points gave Miller the win.

At 165, Cooper Spaulding upset No. 24 Tommy Wentz, 9-1. Spaulding picked up a takedown in the first period for a 3-0 lead. He added a point in the second period with an escape as he started in the bottom position. Wentz was able to get on the board with an escape to start the third period. Spaulding added a point on a stalling warning and then closed out the match with a late takedown to earn the major decision.

Chase Stieb rallied at 174 to post a pin over Evan Sepanlou in 4:54. Sepanlou recorded a takedown early but Stieb escaped shortly after the points were recorded. Before the period closed, Stieb picked up a takedown and two nearfall points for a 6-3 lead. Stieb started in the bottom position to begin the second period and escaped. He picked up a takedown for a 10-3 lead before finishing off Sepanlou with a pin. 

In the 184 match, No. 4 Tyson Beauperthuy received a forfeit win.

Bradley Antesberger, ranked No. 4 at 197, posted a 16-1 tech fall win in 5:28 over Teegan Tschampel. Antesberger led 3-1 after the first three minutes of action. He started down in the bottom position to open the second and escaped quickly. Antesberger followed with a takedown and four nearfall points. He added two nearfall points for a 13-1 lead after two periods. The two wrestlers started in the neutral position for the third period and Antesberger picked up a takedown to end the match 28 seconds into the final period.

In the final match of the night, No. 23 Eli Criblez defeated Mason Garcia by decision, 3-1. The two heavyweights were scoreless after three minutes. Criblez scored the first point with an escape in the second period. Garcia tied the match early in the third period with an escape. Late in the match, Garcia took a shot at a double leg takedown but Criblez was able to gain control and circled to the back of Garcia for a takedown with 12 seconds left in the match.

Doane will return to action in the new year when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the NWCA National Duals on January 10-11. The Tigers' first opponent will be announced about a week before the event.
