Softball faced off against Houston-Victoria on Thursday afternoon. The two teams were meeting for the first time since their historic game in the NAIA Opening Round, an 18-inning contest that currently stands as the longest in opening round history. On Thursday, the Jaguars took the opener, 2-1, and then won the second game in five innings, 8-0.
Game One
After three scoreless innings, Houston-Victoria was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth with two runs. The first run scored on a passed ball with the second scoring on a two-out single.
Doane was able to get on the board in the seventh inning as Payton Cooley delivered a one-out RBI single to plate Anna Prauner. Cooley was stranded on the bases following a pair of ground outs to end the game.
The Tigers finished with four hits in the game, two from Prauner. In the pitcher's circle, Abbi Arroyo started for Doane and threw 3.0-plus innings. She allowed one run on five hits and four walks with one strikeout. Hannah Kline threw 1.0 inning, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. Sarah Shevenell threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
Game Two
Doane was held to a pair of hits in the game while the Jaguars picked up 11 hits. The big inning for Houston-Victoria was a four-run third inning.
Jeryn Allen and Katelyn Hays had the two Doane hits in the game. Faith Molina started and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 3.0 innings of work. She struck out one batter. Arroyo threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.
The Tigers will return to the field on March 23 when they host Morningside in the GPAC opener in Crete. First pitch is set for 1 PM.
