Softball Splits GPAC Opener at Concordia

Softball opened conference play on Friday with a road trip to Seward to take on Concordia. The Bulldogs rallied to take game one, 3-2, but Doane held on to pick up a 4-2 win in the night cap.

The Tigers plated a run in the third inning to start the scoring in game one. Grace Dowding opened with a triple and scored on an error. Concordia scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning. Two scored on a triple and one on a fielder's choice.

Doane came back in the seventh as Jaiden Papik scored on a ground out but the Tigers were unable to push the tying run in from third base.

Dowding led the Tigers with two of the team's six hits in the game. Jeryn Allen had the lone RBI in the game. Faith Molina threw 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three strikeouts.

In game two, Sarah Shevenell threw a complete game for the Tigers, her first at Doane. She went 7.0 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out four.

In the first inning, Kaitlyn Hays put Doane on the board with a two-out solo home run. In the third inning, Lexi Alaniz-Diaz scored on a ground out to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Concordia came back with two runs as they plated single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Doane answered in the sixth with a pair of runs to go in front for good. Hannah Pack had a sacrifice fly to plate the go-ahead run and Marisa Marquez followed with a two-out RBI-double for the final run.

The Tigers posted six hits in the game, two from Marquez. Hays and Marquez as the team's only extra base hits in the game, both resulting in runs scoring.

Doane will be back on the diamond on Saturday, March 30, when they play at home against Morningside. First pitch is set for 12 PM in Crete.
