Softball Garners Split with Morningside

Softball hosted Morningside on Saturday for their first home conference games of the season. The Tigers dropped the opener in nine innings, 3-2, but rebounded with an 8-4 win in game two. The win snapped an eight-game skid to the Mustangs and was the first Doane win since 2019.

In game one, Morningside jumped out to a 2-0 lead following an unearned run crossing the plate in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Doane was able to get on the scoreboard as Hannah Pack delivered an RBI-single to score pinch runner Kennedy Walter.

Grace Dowding tied the game in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to score Payton Cooley. The Mustangs were able to regain the lead in the ninth inning on a leadoff home run which stood to be the difference.

Doane finished with seven hits in the game, two off the bat of Marisa Marquez. She had the team's lone extra base hit, a double.

Abbi Arroyo started for the Tigers and allowed one unearned run on two hits in 3.0 innings. Faith Molina threw 6.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out six.

Game two started with Doane jumping out to the early lead. Katelyn Hays doubled to plate Jeryn Allen in the first inning. Morningside came back to tie the game in the fifth inning on a bases loaded single. In the sixth, a double cleared the bases to give Morningside a 4-1 lead.

Doane responded in the bottom of the sixth with two outs in the inning as seven runs came across the plate to regain the lead. Jaiden Papik doubled to plate Molina. Dowding followed with a two-run double. Allen singled to score Dowding to put the Tigers in front. Hays added a two-run double and Anna Prauner plated the final run with an RBI-single.

The Tigers finished with 10 hits in the game as Allen and Hays had two apiece. Doane picked up four doubles, with two by Hays who also led the team with three RBI. Dowding drove in two runs. Allen scored a team-best two runs.

Sarah Shevenell picked up her second win in as many days, throwing 6.0 innings for the Tigers. She allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits and six walks while striking out five batters. Molina picked up the save with a scoreless inning, allowing one hit.

Next up for the Tigers will be a match-up with NAIA No. 13 Midland on Wednesday, April 3, in Crete. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
