Softball Battles with No. 13 Midland

Softball hosted No. 13 Midland on Thursday afternoon in Crete. The Warriors edged out the Tigers in the opener, 3-2, and posted a 5-1 win in game two for the sweep.

Midland scored a run in the first inning with a two-out single for an early 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, the Warriors added two runs on a two-out, two-run home run to go up 3-0.

Doane battled back in the bottom of the sixth. Isabella Beauchamp singled to drive in Katelyn Hays and Lexi Alaniz-Diaz was hit by a pitch to plate Marisa Marquez with one out. The Tigers left the tying run at third base to end the inning. In the seventh, Anna Prauner led off with a single but would be stranded on the bases as the game concluded.

The Tigers outhit Midland, 8-6, as Prauner led the team with two hits. Abbi Arroyo took the loss as she allowed one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Faith Molina threw 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out five.

In game two, Midland plated two runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Tigers came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Hays doubled to plate Kennedy Walter.

Midland held the 8-6 hits edge in the second game. Britney Hoffman led the Tigers with two hits. Sarah Shevenell took the loss as she allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.0 innings. She had a season-high nine strikeouts. Arroyo threw the final 3.0 innings, allowing one walk and striking out three.

Next up for the Tigers will be a road trip to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Briar Cliff. First pitch on Saturday, April 6, is set for 1 PM.
