Dordt Rallies to Take Two from Softball

Softball played host to Dordt on Saturday afternoon in Crete. The Tigers dropped a pair of tight battles, 6-5 and 5-3.

In the opener, Doane started the scoring with two runs in the third inning. Grace Dowding put down a sacrifice bunt to score Kennedy Walter for the first run. Jeryn Allen followed with a single to drive in Lexi Alaniz-Diaz. Dordt took the lead in the fourth inning with three runs but Doane answered back quickly in the bottom of the inning.

Payton Cooley hit a two-run home run to give the Tigers the lead back, 4-3, after four innings of play. Dordt scored twice in the fifth and added one in the seventh for a 6-4 lead. Doane battled back in the bottom of the final inning as Alaniz-Diaz scored on a wild pitch and Dowding moved to third base representing the tying run. However, she could not advance home as the Tigers dropped the opener.

Doane finished the game with eight hits, two from Alaniz-Diaz, who also scored two runs. Cooley led the team with two RBI.

Abbi Arroyo threw a complete game, covering 7.0 innings as she allowed six runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out three.

In game two, Dordt plated a run with a solo home run in the top of the second inning with Doane answering in the bottom half of the frame. Marisa Marquez delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game as Walter scored. The Tigers took the lead in the third inning on a double by Katelyn Hays to bring Allen around to score.

Dordt tied the game in the top of the sixth as a run scored on a wild pitch but Doane regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. An error allowed Marquez to score and give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. In the seventh inning, Dordt's first three batters reached on errors and came around to score for the final runs.

Doane had four hits in the game, two from Marques as she went 2-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in.

Sarah Shevenell took the loss for the Tigers as she went 7.0 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits and four walks while striking out six.

Next up for Doane will be a make-up game against Briar Cliff on April 16 in Sioux City, Iowa.
