
Hays Homers in both Games; Softball Splits at DWU
Softball took on Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Mitchell, S.D. Doane dropped the opener, 7-3, but bounced back to take game two, 12-4.
Isabella Beauchamp drove in the first run in the opening game with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Dakota Wesleyan plated the next five runs, plating two in the second inning and three in the fourth inning.
Doane cut the deficit in half with a two-run home run by Katelyn Hays in the sixth inning. DWU plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final score.
Five players had hits in the game with Hays having the lone extra base hit. Picking up singles for the Tigers were Grace Dowding, Jeryn Allen, Anna Prauner, and Payton Cooley.
Sarah Shevenell threw 6.0 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out six.
Dakota Wesleyan opened the second game with a single run in the first and second innings. Doane took the lead in the fourth inning with five runs. Faith Molina hit her first career home run, a three-run blast, to put the Tigers up 3-2. Dowding plated a run with a sacrifice fly and the final run of the inning scored on an error.
DWU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth only to see Doane add three runs in the top of the fifth. Jadyn Hunt drew a bases loaded walk, Cooley singled to plate a run, and Dowding reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded as all runners were safe in advancing a base. Dakota Wesleyan hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, leaving Doane in front, 8-4.
In the seventh inning, Allen had an RBI-single which was followed by a three-run home run from Hays, her second of the day.
Hays and Beauchamp had two hits apiece for the Tigers as the team finished with eight. Hays and Molina had three RBI apiece. Four players scored two runs apiece, Hays, Molina, Hunt, and Beauchamp.
Abbi Arroyo started for the Tigers and threw 2.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. Molina picked up the win as she went 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two. Hannah Kline threw the final 1.0 inning, allowing one hit.
Doane returns home for a make-up conference doubleheader against Hastings. The Tigers and Broncos will meet up on April 23 with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 PM.
