
Fast Start Lifts Women's Basketball Past CSM
Women's Basketball hosted Saint Mary (Neb.) on Wednesday evening in the Haddix Center. The Tigers jumped in front 25 seconds into the game and never looked back as they rolled to a 102-49 victory over the Flames. The win snapped a five-game skid for the Tigers as they improved to 14-9 on the year.
Doane led 31-7 after 10 minutes of action as they jumped out to a 22-4 lead after six minutes of play. The Tigers ended the quarter with a 7-0 run. Doane started the second quarter with a 10-0 run and used another 10-0 run in the quarter to push their way to a 60-18 lead at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Flames would score the first point of quarter on a free throw before Doane posted two 9-0 runs on their way to an 86-27 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. The Flames out-scored Doane in the final quarter, 22-16.
Maddie Portwine led the Tigers with 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting, starting the game 7-of-7 from the floor. She added four steals and four rebounds. Megan Chambers posted 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting and Mak Hatcliff finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with four assists. Macy Holtz picked up 11 points and four assists and Kaylee Klover chipped in with 10 points, a game-high nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Ella Johnson was the sixth Tiger to reach double figures with a career-high 10 points.
Doane shot 57-percent (36-of-63) from the floor and 47-percent (8-of-17) from behind the arc while converting 82-percent (22-of-27) at the free throw line. Saint Mary hit 35-percent (18-of-52) from the floor, 20-percent (4-of-20) from behind the arc, and 60-percent (9-of-15) at the free throw line.
The Flames were led by Madelyn Gaughen with 16 points and Jazmyne Villalobos with 12 points. Four players tied for team-high honors with three rebounds apiece and Villalobos led the team with three assists.
Doane will head on the road for their next contest as they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Briar Cliff on Saturday, February 8.
